The National Junior Art Honor Society also known as art club, are working together on their coal bucket design. These students meet on Tuesdays in Ms. Cosby's room after school.
However, I have a feeling they will be coming in before and after school beyond the days we are planned to meet due to their dedication to get their coal bucket artwork complete!

Why coal buckets?

The purpose of SEK Art Fest is to create a vibrant arts community, increase tourism, enhance community pride and enrich quality of life in the region. Similar events have been very successful for communities across the United States and in many other countries. Under the umbrella of the Little Balkans Festival Association, the SEK Art Fest will open up new opportunities for growth and expansion of our area’s largest tourism draw.

For 2013, we have chosen to reflect on the unique heritage of the region by integrating the Miner’s Hall Museum’s highly anticipated traveling Smithsonian exhibit “The Way We Worked” into the Art Fest theme of “Mining Memories.” The Art Fest will consist of an exhibition of giant coal buckets on Pittsburg’s Broadway Street throughout the summer, with various special events taking place each month to celebrate the work of artists from throughout the region in designing the buckets.

The Art Fest is made possible by the generosity of 26 underwriters from Pittsburg and Joplin who contributed the underwriting fee. The artists have been selected by a jury panel based on their previous work and the design they proposed for a coal bucket. The buckets will be arranged in an easy and exciting walking tour in downtown Pittsburg. On September 1, the coal buckets will be sold at public auction.

In addition to the giant coal buckets, area schools are designing real-life coal buckets that will be displayed in retail store windows throughout downtown. The theme for the designs is anything that makes this area a great place to live and/or reflects on the coal-mining heritage of the region.

Design Expectations for the coal bucket

The SEK Art Fest understands the creative process and development of an art piece requires flexibility.  The criteria for approval/disapproval of a design concept include:

·         School has the option to finish the interior surface of the Art Objects if desired, but finishing the exterior surface is the only requirement for participation.

·         The design must reflect something about Southeast Kansas and the Four State area that makes this area a great place to live and/or reflects the coal mining heritage and history of the area.

·         No direct label advertising or logos of a company or product will be allowed.

·         The SEK Art Fest is a public exhibit and designs must be appropriate for all audiences. Designs that may appear to be disrespectful or inappropriate on political, religious, or other grounds will not be approved.

What is SEK Art Fest and their mission?

The SEK Art Fest is a new festival coming soon to downtown Pittsburg. This event will be an opportunity for Pittsburg to support a vibrant arts community!

Mission
to promote the arts and cultural festivals in Southeast Kansas. The goal of the SEK Art Fest is to increase regional prosperity, enhance quality of life, strengthen community pride and activate economic development.

Description
Pittsburg and the greater Southeast Kansas region have a unique and exciting opportunity to create a vibrant arts community, increase tourism, enhance community pride and enrich quality of life in the region. Under the umbrella of the Little Balkans Association, the SEK Art Fest will open up new opportunities for growth and expansion of our area's largest tourism draw.
